Título

HIGHER-ORDER ABERRATIONS 6 MONTHS AFTER CORNEAL COLLAGEN CROSSLINKING (FAST PROTOCOL) FOR KERATOCONUS IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS

Objetivo

To evaluate the effect of fast corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) in progressive keratoconus patients on higher-order aberrations (HOAs) between baseline and 6 months after CXL in pediatric patients.

Método

This study included 23 consecutive keratoconus patients under 21 years old who were treated with epithelium-off fast-CXL and followed for a minimum of 6 months. The following corneal HOAs were measured with Aladdin optical biometry & topography system coma, spherical aberration, and total corneal HOAs. A 2-tailed paired-samples t test was used to compare baseline and postoperative aberrations.

Resultado

The mean preoperative total ocular HOAs, total coma, and spherical aberration were 1.23 ± 0.4 μm, 0.78 ± 0.36 μm, 0.15 ± 0.09 μm, 0.98 ± 0.46 μm, respectively. At 6 months, the mean values were 3.58 ± 10.4 μm, 0.83 ± 0.33 μm, 0.14 ± 0.13 μm, respectively (all P> 0.05). Overall, the degree of corneal HOAs in this case series was relatively unchanged after CXL, with a mean change of 2,35µm (P = .32). Coma contributed most to the total amount of HOAs but was virtually unchanged on average (mean change 0.06 µm). The HOA subtype of spherical aberrations did not change (mean change of 0.01 µm). There was no effect of the change in HOAs on the change in CDVA.

Conclusão

Corneal HOAs in general were relatively unchanged from baseline to 6 months after fast CXL in eyes of pediatric patients with progressive keratoconus.
